Information of the Tournament
Introduction
The Netball Club HKUSTSU is a student run, non-profit making sports organization
established in 1999, and is now becoming an utmost sports club in HKUST. Our
ultimate goal is to promote Netball in HKUST and organize matches with other
universities and tertiary institutions.
The Inter-Varsity Netball Invitation Tournament, being a unique function for
the year, is our main focus of attention. It aims at promoting Netball in
all universities and tertiary institutions. There will be competitions in
the Ladies' and Men's sections. The Men's Netball Competition is a breakthrough
in the Netball games' tradition in Hong Kong.
Objectives
O To promote Netball in all tertiary institutions
O To strengthen the linkage among tertiary institutions
O To establish students' confidence to face challenges
O To enhance physical development of university students
O To foster cooperation and interaction between different tertiary institutions
O To provide an opportunity for increasing their Netball knowledge
O To encourage students to participate in sports
O To relieve pressure from work and studies
Participants
All participants are full-time students from local tertiary institutions.
Each participating team will consist of at least seven team members. The Section
Matches will be cancelled when less than 3 teams participated in each section.

Rules and Regulations
Conduct of Matches
1. Rules
The rules of play shall be those of the International Federation of Netball
Association Rules.
2. Timing
All matches will be timed by the central clock and will start strictly according
to the official schedule. Umpires will stop the game for a maximum of 2 minutes
of injury time, but will not add this time to the end of the half. Matches
start and finish on the umpires' whistles.
3. Points System
- 4 for a win/walk-over/ forfeit
- 2 for a draw
- 0 for a loss
4. Jewelry and Fingernails
No items of Jewelry shall be worn. Fingernails shall be cut short or properly
taped or close-fitting gloves may be worn. Players not abiding by these rules
will not be allowed to play. Umpires will check each player before he or she
gets on court.
5. Injuries
Any players who are bleeding from an injury should not be allowed to continue
playing until the injury has been satisfactorily covered and/or the bleeding
has stopped.
6. Cancellation of games by teams
48 hours notice must be given to the Netball Club HKUSTSU in the event of
a team being unable to play. This team will be considered to have forfeited
the match and 4 points will be awarded to the non-offending team.
7. Late arrivals
- Players: No player arriving after play has started is allowed to replace
a player who has filled the position of the late arrival, except that the
late arrival may be used as a substitute in accordance with rule concerning
with Substitution. If a player has not filled the position of the late arrival,
the late arrival may not enter the game while play is in progress, but after
notifying the Umpire may take the Court: (I) after a goal has been scored.
In this case the player must play in a position left vacant in the team; (ii)
at a stoppage for injury or illness; (iii) immediately following an interval.
- Teams: Any team that is more than 5 minutes late
for a match will be penalized. After 5 minutes, one goal for each subsequent
late minute will be awarded to the other team.
Should any team fail to have 5 or more players by the first interval, the
match will be forfeited in favor of the team present. On forfeiting the game,
the other team will receive 4 points.
8. Substitution
Substitution and team changes may be made:
(i) at an interval;
(ii) when play is stopped for injury or illness;
(iii) by the opposing team, in the event of failure to give notification of
substitutions and team changes to the opposing Team Official.
It is the responsibility of a Team Captain to notify
the Scorers, the Umpires and the opposing Team Captain if substitutions and/or
team changes are made. When a substitution or team changes is made both teams
have the right to make substitutions and/or team changes. There is no limit
to the number of substitutions which can be made by a team provided that players
used do not exceed the fifteen named for the match.
Timing of Games
The central clock inside the Sports Hall will be used for timing all matches.
Matches will start and finish on the Umpires' whistles and consist of:
O 1 minute warning before the start of each match
O 10 minutes halves
O 2 minutes half time break
O Umpires may stop the game for a maximum of 2 minutes injury time, but will
not add this time to the end of the half.
