TACRINE

Tacrine are usually used as a therapeutic agent for Alzheimer'sDisease. Its ability in cholinesteraseinhibition has proved which can relieve the deterioration in cognitiveperformance of the patients

What is Tacrine?

Tacrine, which also called tetrahydroaminoacridine (THA) or commercially called Cognex. It was the first drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which specified to treat Alzheimer's Disease.

The action of tacrine is to decrease the breakdown process of acetylcholine by cholinesterase and prevent the destruction of acetylcholine in the cerebral cortex. As the acetlychloline level of the Alzheimer's patients were maintained low, the action of tacrine results with an increase of acetylcholine level in the brain which enhance the communication of the nerve cells in brain and relieve the deterioration of the symptoms.
