Rayli Rayli

SARANGKOT

POKHARA ABC HOTEL 600RS

THAMEL 8.76-8.75 ,POKHARA 8.75-8.72

Lee,

Nepal,

Mok,

1) KTM-->Pokhara巴士

Green Line  Golden Bus   單程US$10(自費午餐) US$12(包午餐)

KTM Dubar Square : Rps$20/

Patan Dubar Square : Rps$200/

Pasupatinath : Rps$250/

Boudha : Rps$100/

Devi's fall : Rps$10/

Hindu Shiva Cave (Devi's fall下游) : Rps$20/(相機要寄存在入口locker)

KTM : Rps$35-40/hr

Pokhara : Rps$2/min

Pashimina (75%)

Rps$750

Rps$1,600

刺繡cusion  US$6-8

               乘船來回+船夫帶路上山 : Rps$500 (價錢牌上寫著Rps$500是不包帶路) 最好先在LakeSideRps$15, 和平佛塔山腳要Rps$35

LakeSide-->Pokhara Central bus stop : Rps$70

Thamel-->Patan : Rps$100

連上Gandurk(Poon Hill路線)都要登山證 Rps$2,000/

Pokhara

Tori,

Poon Hill and Grandruk的檢查站是在Naya Pul.

他做導遊帶我們到藏傳佛教寺院(不是西藏村那個)、西藏村、Devi'sFall HinduShivaCave半天遊收費Rps600 (包全程taxi, 但門票自費);
上山做導遊兼挑夫Rps500/(2個人);

B.rgds,

Answers

Dear Andrew,

Thanks for your e-mail and bought my book.

Pls see my own homepage - More information about Nepal section, and my book (page 47), where you can find travel agents, you can tell them journey and let them quote price for you.

My homepage:

http://home.ust.hk/~kemok/

Since price vary from number of people (your group), number of porter(s) and guide you hire (see my book page 46), but can be USD15 to USD30 a day,

I do recommend you to quote one or two more to compare since you still have time.

Comments:

For day 2)

You will arrive Pokhara around 2:00 pm,

after hotel check-in and lunch, you may choose boating on the lake,

before sunset, use taxi take you to Tibetian village to walk up

World Peace Pagoda (1 hour), scenery is beautiful.

For day 3)

I do not recommend to have early taxi to Sarangkot,

to see sunrise, then start you journey to Naya Pul.

on the first day, walk up to Ulleri, do not stop at Ti......

Otherwise the nexdt day will be a very hard day to you (steep stone steps).

(Naya Pul to Ulleri  (around 5 hours, Ulleri to Ghorepani (around 5 hours)

For day 6)

It is a long journey from Tadapani to Naya Pul (To Grandruk around 3.5 hours,

to Naya Pul around 5 hours), even walk down is a bit easy

(You cannot see scenery in Grandruk, as afternoon most of time cannot have mountain view)

3 days of Chitwan trip is quite standard.

Now is winter, travel to Tibet is bit hard if snow on the ground,

check/ask more about road condition in Tibet side.

Do contact me if you have further questions.

Questions

Hi Kwok wah

I have attended your semina in ITA and brought your book about Nepal.  They provide useful information.  I have some questions and hope you can give me some adivces.

I will go to Nepal in Oct for 15 days (4-18 Oct).  I want to do the Jomsmo trek (fly from Pokhaka, go to Muktinath, then walk down to Pokhara) in 8-9 days.  I will also want to go to Poon Hill.  I want to spend the remaining time in Katmandu or Pokhara.  I will go alone. I will probably hire a porter to carry my bag.  I need a porter more than a guide.

1. would it be better to hide the porter in Pokhara?  But doing so would mean that I need to pay the airfare to send him to JomsomAny suggestion on here to find the reliable porter?

2. what are the better place to stop and stay overnight?  Taking photo will be one of my prime activity on the trek and so I want to capture the sunrise/sunset.

3. Your photo in the book is very nice.  What photo gear did you bring with you?   Is a tele such as 80-200 useful and worth to bring with?  Did you bring a tripod as well?

4. For the lodges along the trek, can I have my own room or I have to share the room with other?  Can I expect to have a personel bath room?

5. Do I need a down jacket at that time of the year? or a fleece is enough?

thanks
Simon

Answers

Hi Simon,

Thanks for you attended my talk and bought my book.

Muktinath trip is a wonderful trip, as I said in my book,

You can see different landscape scenery (barren land, alpine forest etc., of course snow-capped mountains.

From my book, you can see my time, by calculation, you can know

How many days you needed for the trip (it depends on you), remember my

advice that

Do not put your schedule too tight.  8-9 days for Muktinath trip, is a

bit in a hurry.  Moreover, October is high season, you may face

difficult to book flight, hotel etc., so book earlier (in HK or when you

just arrive Kathmandu).

From my experiences, there are people, who are not qualified for guide,

So work as a porter (like they cannot speak good english or cannot

pass the exam), these people are willing work as porter.

In fact, for most of the treks in Nepal, treks are very clear and easy

Except after Tatopani is a little confusion.  I agreed that porter is

important than guide, after the trip you can be a guide too.

You questions:

1) I saw from other guide book said you may hire guide/porter from the

starting point, that means Jomsom, many nepali are willing to work as a

guide/porter in order to earn money.  Jomsom is a small village, there

are guest houses and simple restaurants.  Perhaps you can find from

guest house/rest, of course there is no guarantee.  But on the way, you

will pass through several villages, there should be people who is

willing to work, it is my opinion, you need to try your luck.  You may

try to ask the hotel you stay in Pokhara, perhaps they know porter in

Jomsom.

2) If only for mountain view, I like Jharkot, Jomsom, Kobang, Kalopani

and Poon Hill.  But small villages are nice to experience, to feel.

Afternoon usually are cloudy, no sunset, but sunrise is impressive.

3) I did not bring the tripod because I did not hire porter, it is

better to take tripod especially you have porter.  I like to take photos

too, I have Nikon F65, 70-300mm zoom and 35-70mm lens, but a more wide

angle lens even better (28mm or below).  If you like to take photos, do

bring it.  Otherwise, you will regret about it

4) Most of the guesthouses have shared bath room, that means you have

your room but bath room/toilet is outside, some have bath room/toilet

inside the room, but you need to pay about higher the room charge

(around 150 to 300 Rs., but it is still cheap to you)

5) Oh you have not yet read through my book.  The weather in April and

earlier October is quite similar, still hot downhill, around 30C

daytime, but Muktinath is 3,800M, it can be as cold as 3-5C in the

morning, of course you need to bring fleece, it is enough warm to you.

My advice:

When you arrive Kathmandu or in HK (if by TG, you will arrive

afternoon), check if there are direct flight from Kathmandu to Jomsom,

if yes, you can save time.  Do ask people from hotel, they can trust and

help you.

Do tell me if have more questions.

Dear Rosetta,

Thanks for your mail.

I am lazy to type chinese, hopefully you can understand easily.

Pls check my book, page 119, you can easily check the time for your

journey.

Day 1, flight from Pokhara to Jomsom in the morning, walk down to

Kobang, 6 hours, sleep there.

Day 2, continue journey to Kalopani, 4 hours, stay there.

Day 3, from Kalopani to Dana, 5.5 hours, stay Dana

Day 4, Dana to Sikha, 6.5 hours, stay Sikha

Day 5, Sikha to Ghorepani (4 hours), stay there,

Day 6, To see sunrise in the early morning in Poon Hill, then walk down

hill, stay in Tirk....

Day 7, continue journey and arrive Pokhara afternnon (4 hours)

I do recommed 7 days, you may further check if you can finish within 6 days.

I use the cheapest flight (Royal Nepali Air), only USD50, other maybe a

bit more, like Necon air (around USD55 to USD70), but Royal Nepali Air's

flight a bit old and may not as safe as others.  You may buy ticket in

the travel agents in Nepal/HK, but you may not get seat for the next day

when you arrive to buy.  You can book in advance in HK.  Try to contact

travel agents in HK, or by e-mail to contact travel agents in Nepal, to

book ticket in advance.

Both period are good sesons, but October/Nov is better.  Becasue my trip

was in early April, between Ghasa and Sikha had rain in the afterrnoon.

If you have regularly exerises, should be ok to you.

In fact, I ever saw an old man, aged around 70, can walk very fast, I

regreted myself when I compared to him.

Do hire a porter to decrease your loading.

From Jomsom to Tatapani is downhill trek, should be easy, but after and

before Ghorepani is uphill, a bit hard.

If you can have more time, walk slowly and enjoy more the beautiful

scenery especially in Kobang, Kalopani.

Do contact me if yo have more questions.

Mok Kwok-wah

Questions:

Hi, Kwok-wah,

Really thanks a lot for your reply.

Several things about my trip:-

It's 7 days only!!! (Too bad)

I plan to depart on 20 Dec & back on 26 Dec.

I won't take Nepal Airways as I know there is no flight on the date I come back.

I will take Thai Airways instead.  But the restricted Econ is full for the

departure date.  Only business class is available.  I have asked my agent to

reserve for me for both Econ & Busi.  The price for Econ is $4xxx while the

Busi is $6xxx.

And one more thing is that I think I cannot go to Pokhara (i.e. Annapurna)

anymore... coz I have got 7 days only & my girlfriend is fear of taking the

domestic flight.  I don't think I will take the day-long bus ride to

there...

So I will probably stay in Kathmandu & nearby for 2-3 days & try to find

some good 3-4 days trekking near Kathmandu area.

Do you have any suggestions on this?

For the porter & guide, I will probably hire one.  But I am thinking of

hiring them thr' Nepal local agents, or contact those recommended guides

directly.  Do you have a rough idea how much is it per day?

And one more thing want to have your advice.  Is the accomodation (and also

other spending e.g. food ) very cheap over there?  I just checked & noted

that most of the stays in there is below HK$100 & at most $200 per person

per night is very good already, is it true?

Thanks a lot again for your help.

Cheers  :)

Franky

Anwers

Dear Franky,

It regret that you cannot go to Pokhara,

it is a nice place for relax and sightseeing, quiet and comfortable,

it is a bit different from other places of Nepal.

A place near Kathmandu, I would recommend Nagarkot,

it is a place for vacation, to see mountains, also good

for short trekking.  But I did not trek when I was there.

Pls check with other guidebook (lonely planet) or

get help from guide/porter about trekking.

If you check from my book, the standard charges for porter/guide is USD10/20,

if you hire them from travel agent, it is the right charge.

If you hire them on spot, should be cheaper (you may argue the charge).

I have a porter recommended from my reader, see the site:

http://www.geocities.com/walkingnepal/mypage.html

Not only accommodation but all things are cheap in Nepal.

For accommodation, if you are willing to spend USD10-20,

should get quite comfortable room.

For 7 days' trip, I would recommend:

day 1) HK to Kathmandu, Nepal, arrived around 1:30pm by TG,

after hotel check-in and lunch, visit Durbar Square, stay in Kathmandu.

day 2) Take bus/taxi to Nagarkot (with guide/porter or to hire local) stay in Nagarkot.

day 3) Short trek around Nagarkot, stay in Nagarkot.

day 4) Short trek around Nagarkot (end with guide/porter ?), stay in Nagarkot.

day 5) Take bus/taxi to Bhaktapur, visit Durbar Sqaure and Plotters' Square,

afternoon take bus/taxi to Patan, stay in Patan.

day 6) Take bus/taxi to Kathmandu, visit Bouda, Indian Temple, stay in Kathmandu.

day 7)  Visit Money Temple in the morning and take return flight afternoon.

Pokhara is totally different when compared to Kathmandu,

you should see it next time.

do contact me if you have further questions.

Answer

Hi Stella, Caroline and Amanda,

I saw yr schedule, 15 days is enough for good memory, my comments:

For day 2) dead body burning is in Indian Temple, not Monkey Temple,

Indian Temple is near Bouda.

For Day 3) Kathmandu to Pokhara by tourist bus (250 Rs./people) is about

6 1/2 hours, if you are 4 people, you may consider to hire a car (more

money but fast and can stop for photo)

Ghandrunk to Ghorepani is a dangerous section, take care !

For day 11) Before daybreak, take taxi to view point, Sarangkot, at

mid-level to see sunrise.  After, climb up to top (more than half hour),

then walk to Naudanda (3 hours), bus to Pokhara (this route just spend

the morning)

Bhaktapur and Nagarkot are in the same direction, if you visit them at

the same time, save travelling time.  How about Bouda and Money Temple?

Do you forget it ?  You may arrange to visit Bouda and Indian Temple

(nearby) at the same time.

4-people is good to take taxi for visit, remember to argue for price.

Moreover, Airport taxi to downtown is 250 Rs. (be careful at night time)

For changing money, my experience is in Departure Hall's bank, but I

have a friend just back from Nepal, he said the guard before the door

mentioned the bank closed (daytime), but I did not believe (I am not

sure for night time).  Perhaps some readers follow my book to change

money in Departure Hall, making them annoyed, so they tell lies.

If you do not want to try, you may change money in Arrival Hall in

Airport, though 1% commission, still better than town, try and let me

know when you back.
